In the small country of Luxembourg, bordered by Belgium, Germany and France - are first stop was the Arbed Bldg; that was built in 1922 in the French 18th century style. It is located in the place of the martyrs that has a famous rose garden commemorating World War I. Availing ourselves of the free transportation in the city, we took a tram ride to view the fortress beneath the Monte de Clasen, located in a huge river gorge. This fortress is known as the Bock Casemates and consists of a honeycomb of rock passages carved out by the Spanish in 1644 and later extended by the French in the late 17th century and the Austrians in the 18th century. During World War I and II 35,000 locals were sheltered there. Just above the casemates we went to Saint Michael's church. It is the oldest church building in the city, originally from 987 A.D. the present church is Gothic and was built in 1688.
